"Cryo diving wearing a life jacket?" PM Modi didn't go snorkeling. Recognize the differences

After Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Lakshadweep, a Union Territory in India comprising 36 islands, the region has gained prominence on India's "travel map." The Prime Minister, during his visit, not only inaugurated several developmental projects and a crucial optical fiber connection but also showcased his adventurous side by attempting snorkeling. The images shared by PM Modi featuring the territory's serene beaches, blue waters, and white sands led to a surge in Google searches for Lakshadweep.

In a tweet, PM Modi encouraged adventure enthusiasts, stating, "For those who wish to embrace the adventurer in them, Lakshadweep has to be on your list. During my stay, I also tried snorkeling - what an exhilarating experience it was!"

However, some social media users questioned the Prime Minister's choice of wearing a life jacket, expressing confusion between snorkeling and scuba diving, using the terms interchangeably. Various posts suggested that PM Modi was going scuba diving with a life jacket on, prompting others to clarify the distinction between the two aquatic activities.

Snorkeling, a popular and less intensive underwater recreation, involves minimal training. It is commonly practiced in destinations like Kerala, Andaman and Nicobar Islands, and Lakshadweep in India. Snorkellers explore the ocean and marine life from the water's surface without descending to significant depths, typically in shallow reefs ranging from 1 to 4 meters. The equipment includes a snorkel tube for breathing air above the water, a dive mask, a wetsuit, and a life jacket for non-swimmers or the elderly.

On the other hand, scuba diving is a more intense activity undertaken by well-trained and certified divers. It requires extensive training on breathing equipment and safety procedures, as divers stay underwater for extended periods. Scuba divers use advanced equipment such as a regulator hose connected to an air tank (containing a mixture of oxygen and helium) for underwater breathing and swim fins for movement in deeper ocean depths.

The distinction between snorkeling and scuba diving lies in the depth of exploration and the complexity of equipment and training involved in the latter. The surge in interest following PM Modi's snorkeling experience highlights the growing curiosity about Lakshadweep as a travel destination.
