Mewaram Jain, a former MLA from Barmer, has been suspended from the primary membership of the Rajasthan Congress, a move announced by State Congress president Govind Singh Dotasra. The suspension comes in the wake of a rape case filed against Jain and eight others, including his close aide Ramswaroop Acharya and Rajasthan Police Service official Anand Singh Rajpurohi. The case, filed in December 2023, involves allegations of raping and molesting the adolescent daughter of a woman.
Dotasra, in the order, mentioned Jain's involvement in "immoral activities" as a clear breach of discipline under the Congress party's constitution. The suspension is effective immediately.
Notably, explicit clips purportedly featuring Jain have surfaced on social media, a claim he has dismissed, asserting that they are doctored.
Following the suspension, the Rajasthan Congress chief refrained from providing detailed comments on the matter, stating, "I have taken action in the matter. There is nothing to say on the issue," as reported by India Today.
The BJP seized the opportunity to criticize the Congress, alleging that party leaders were aware of the case but failed to take action during Ashok Gehlot's tenure. The BJP spokesperson, Laxmikant, emphasized the three-year-old nature of the case and accused Congress leaders of inaction during Gehlot's leadership.
Mewaram Jain, a three-time victor in the Barmer constituency on a Congress ticket, faced defeat in the recent Rajasthan election against BJP rebel Priyanka Choudhary. Jain has previously served as the chairman of the Gau Seva Ayog.
