Ex-president of the Maldives Nasheed denounces the official's "appalling" comments toward PM Modi

Former Maldives President Mohamed Nasheed expressed strong condemnation on Sunday for the disrespectful comments made by Maldives minister Mariyam Shiuna against Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. This comes in the wake of a controversy sparked by Maldives ministers mocking PM Modi's visit to Lakshadweep. Nasheed characterized the language used by Minister Shiuna as "appalling" and underscored India's role as a "key ally" crucial for the security and prosperity of the archipelago nation.

In his statement, Nasheed emphasized the significance of India as a strategic ally, instrumental for the well-being and security of the Maldives. He urged the government, led by Mohamed Muizzu, to distance itself from the derogatory comments made by Mariyam Shiuna and provide a clear assurance to India that these remarks do not reflect the official government policy.

Mariyam Shiuna, serving as the Deputy Minister of Youth Empowerment in the Maldives, faced backlash for referring to Prime Minister Narendra Modi as a "clown" and a "puppet" in posts on X, which were subsequently deleted. Nasheed called attention to the need for a more respectful discourse, especially considering India's crucial role as a key partner.

The former President also highlighted the derogatory comments made by other Maldives officials, including MP Zahid Rameez, who ridiculed PM Modi's visit to Lakshadweep. Rameez's remarks insinuated a form of competition between the Maldives and Lakshadweep, dismissing the latter's ability to provide services and maintain cleanliness. These comments prompted sharp criticism, with calls from various quarters to boycott the Maldives.

The incident reflects a strained diplomatic situation, and Nasheed's condemnation underscores the need for maintaining decorum in international relations, especially with key allies like India. The emphasis on India's significance as a strategic partner for the Maldives highlights the potential repercussions such derogatory remarks can have on diplomatic ties and regional cooperation.
