FIR for 'violence, assault' in Assam against Rahul Gandhi and several Congress leaders

On Tuesday, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced that a case has been filed against Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and KC Venugopal, along with other party members. This legal action stems from a clash between Congress workers and police personnel in Guwahati. The confrontation unfolded after permission was denied for Rahul Gandhi's Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra to use the main routes into Guwahati.

Himanta Biswa Sarma clarified that the FIR has been registered by the police due to Congress members' involvement in "wanton acts of violence, provocation, damage to public property, and assault on police personnel" on January 23.

The Assam Chief Minister had directed the Congress yatra, led by Rahul Gandhi, to avoid entering Guwahati directly and instead use the Guwahati bypass. However, when the yatra was prevented from entering the city, clashes erupted between Congress workers and the police. In response to the breaking of barricades by Congress members, the police used force to maintain control.

Following the incident, Rahul Gandhi addressed party supporters on the city's outskirts, referring to them as "babbar sher" (lions) who demonstrated strength in overcoming barricades. He asserted that while they had breached barricades, they would not break the law.

In reaction to Rahul Gandhi's comments, Himanta Biswa Sarma criticized both Gandhi and the Congress workers for employing "Naxalite tactics" and urged the registration of a case against Gandhi for allegedly "provoking the crowd."
