Government asked by a US court to reply to Nikhil Gupta's attorneys over the Pannun murder plot

In this legal development, a New York court has taken action regarding the case involving Nikhil Gupta, who is accused of conspiracy related to the planned murder of Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, a Sikh separatist. The court has issued an order, instructing the US federal government to respond to a motion put forward by Gupta's defense team. This motion specifically seeks access to material relevant to the charges brought against Gupta in the conspiracy case.

The order, issued by US District Judge Victor Marrero, highlights that on January 4, 2024, Gupta's defense counsel filed a motion to compel the production of discovery. This motion requests the court to issue an order directing the government to provide the defense with the necessary discovery material. The court has mandated that the government must file a reply to this motion within three days from the date of the order.

Gupta faces serious charges, including murder-for-hire and conspiracy to commit murder-for-hire. United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York, Matthew G Olsen, has indicated that these charges carry substantial penalties, with each offense having a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison.

Moreover, the prosecution contends that Gupta collaborated with an employee of the Indian government in the alleged plot to murder Gurpatwant Singh Pannun. The arrest and detention of Gupta were carried out by Czech authorities on June 30, 2023, per the extradition treaty between the United States and the Czech Republic. This legal development marks a significant step in the ongoing legal proceedings related to the foiled murder conspiracy.
