During an exclusive interview with India Today TV, Indian-American journalist and foreign policy expert Fareed Zakaria expressed his optimism about the Ram Temple inauguration ceremony serving as a unifying force for the country rather than a divisive one.
Speaking with India Today News Director Rahul Kanwal at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Zakaria conveyed his delight at witnessing the positive sentiments surrounding the 'pran pratishtha' of the idol of Lord Ram in Ayodhya on January 22. He emphasized the need to channel this enthusiasm toward fostering unity in the nation.
The consecration ceremony at the Ram Mandir in Ayodhya, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, is expected to draw over 8,000 dignitaries from various backgrounds, including saints. Zakaria commended the outpouring of positive sentiment but urged that it should contribute to the unification of the country.
Reflecting on India's traditional society, Zakaria noted that despite its traditional nature, the country remained "very patriarchal." He highlighted the lower participation of women in the labor force compared to Saudi Arabia, attributing it to a traditional home structure. Zakaria observed that this aspect has been politicized and weaponized, urging leaders to find ways for people to take pride in themselves without marginalizing others.
While acknowledging the importance of pride in one's religion and culture, Zakaria pointed out the leadership's responsibility to foster this pride without undermining others. He expressed concern about the BJP's role in what he perceived as a political project aimed at making Indian Muslims feel like second-class citizens.
Zakaria emphasized the historical greatness of Hinduism, praising its incredible pluralism and tolerance, qualities he believes have been compromised in the current political landscape. According to Zakaria, Hinduism has traditionally been the most tolerant religion globally, allowing for diverse beliefs and practices.
