Meeting with PM Modi, Udhayanidhi Stalin requests funding for flood relief in Tamil Nadu

DMK leader Udhayanidhi Stalin, who serves as the Sports Minister of Tamil Nadu, recently engaged in a meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi. During this interaction, he fervently appealed to the Prime Minister for the prompt release of funds dedicated to undertaking vital relief, restoration, and rehabilitation efforts in the districts of Tamil Nadu grappling with the aftermath of devastating floods.

In a statement shared on X (formerly Twitter), Udhayanidhi expressed, "On behalf of the Tamil Nadu Government, I requested the Prime Minister for the immediate release of National Disaster Relief Fund to undertake comprehensive relief, restoration, and rehabilitation works in flood-affected districts of TN as requested by our Hon'ble Chief Minister @mkstalin. The Prime Minister assured us that he would take necessary steps (sic)."

In addition to emphasizing the urgency of financial support for flood-affected areas, Udhayanidhi extended an invitation to PM Modi to attend the opening ceremony of the Khelo India Youth Games scheduled to take place in Chennai on January 19. Alongside this, he presented the Prime Minister with a coffee table book showcasing the successful organization of the CM Trophy Games 2023 and the Asian Men's Hockey Championship, both hosted by Tamil Nadu.

Acknowledging the challenges faced by the people of Tamil Nadu in the concluding weeks of 2023, particularly in dealing with heavy rainfall and subsequent flooding, Udhayanidhi expressed condolences for the loss of lives during this period. Last month witnessed unprecedented rainfall, leading to waterlogging predicaments in various districts of Tamil Nadu, both in the northern and southern regions. This resulted in a series of unfortunate accidents and extensive destruction, commencing with severe flooding in Chennai and its environs.

As the state government grappled with the complexities of waterlogging in the capital city, the relentless downpours persisted in southern Tamil Nadu, causing the loss of 31 lives and exacerbating the already challenging situation. Udhayanidhi's plea to the Prime Minister underscores the critical need for immediate financial assistance to address the multifaceted consequences of the recent floods and support the affected communities in their recovery efforts.
