Not an attack: The brother of the Trinamool leader refutes 'inciting' a mob to attack investigators

In an interview with India Today TV, Sheikh Alamgir, the brother of Trinamool Congress leader Shahjahan Sheikh, vehemently refuted allegations made by the BJP, asserting that they played no role in the mob attack on Enforcement Directorate (ED) officers in Sandeshkhali.

Addressing the accusations, Sheikh Alamgir expressed disbelief in the claims, particularly emphasizing the lack of concrete evidence such as videos or pictures to substantiate the allegations against him. He challenged the credibility of the BJP's assertions, stating, "It is easy to make allegations but tough to prove any. If I was involved in any crime, I would not go back home."

The incident in question occurred on January 5, when a mob, purportedly supporters of Shahjahan Sheikh, attacked three ED officers en route to his residence in Sandeshkhali for conducting raids related to the ration distribution scam in North 24 Parganas district. Despite BJP allegations that the mob was incited by Sheikh and his brother Alamgir, the latter maintained that he was not present in Sandeshkhali during the attack.

Elaborating on the circumstances surrounding the incident, Alamgir highlighted the villagers' suspicion of a conspiracy leading to the ED officers' presence. He emphasized that the confrontation was not an attack but rather a reaction by villagers seeking clarification on the officers' unexpected appearance. Alamgir pointed out the influence of provocative speeches by BJP leaders two days before the incident, creating an atmosphere of anticipation among the villagers.

Terming the case a "political conspiracy," Alamgir asserted that their involvement was unrelated to the ration distribution issue but rather centred around their engagement in fish farming. He expressed frustration over the lack of notice from the ED regarding their appearance and stated, "Had they said that there was some corruption related to fish farming, I could have given it some thought."

Describing the aftermath, Alamgir highlighted the mental stress his family was undergoing, with his children unable to attend school due to the situation. He pointed out the harassment they faced as a result of the incident, affecting their daily lives and access to education.

In the context of Shahjahan Sheikh's current status, Alamgir refuted claims that his brother had fled to Bangladesh. Expressing difficulty in reaching Shahjahan, he speculated that the BJP might have more information about his whereabouts. Despite attempts to contact him, Alamgir asserted that he has been unable to establish communication with his missing brother.
