Following an assault on Prosecutor General Hussain Shameem, the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has leveled accusations against President Mohamed Muizzu’s administration, alleging that it shields wrongdoers. This assertion comes in the wake of an incident where Shameem was reportedly attacked on a street in Male City, subsequently receiving medical attention at the ADK Hospital.
In a statement issued earlier, the MDP vehemently condemned the assault on Shameem, attributing it to purportedly close connections between high-ranking government officials and criminal factions. The party expressed concern over what it perceives as a lack of adequate security provided to officials entrusted with executing constitutional duties.
Moreover, the MDP raised alarm over a perceived uptick in violent attacks within the Maldives since President Muizzu assumed office, contrasting it with a purported decline during the previous administration. This observation underscores the MDP's contention that such assaults are facilitated by the nexus between government authorities and criminal syndicates.
President Muizzu's electoral victory over the India-friendly incumbent Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, regarded as having close ties to China, adds a geopolitical dimension to the unfolding situation. The MDP posits that the audacious nature of these attacks is symptomatic of the patronage extended by government entities to criminal elements operating within the Maldives.
Former Maldivian President Solih, serving as the interim leader of the MDP, has labeled the attack as "politically motivated," underscoring the need for swift justice and condemning violence as incompatible with democratic principles.
Furthermore, the MDP has urged the government to sever purported links with criminal networks and conduct a thorough investigation into Shameem's assault to ensure accountability.
Meanwhile, the Prosecutor General’s Office (PGO) has disclosed that Shameem was targeted by two individuals riding a motorcycle, utilizing a weapon in the attack. Although specific details regarding the weapon remain undisclosed, the Maldives National Defense Force (MNDF) has bolstered Shameem's security in response to the incident.
