Snow is on the way! White glory is seen returning to Kashmir on a satellite

India Today’s Open-Source Intelligence (OSINT) team, utilizing satellite imagery, has meticulously scrutinized the evolving winter landscape of Kashmir, documenting a significant expansion in the coverage of snow blankets compared to the preceding week. This transformation comes as a welcome relief to the region, which had experienced an unusual absence of snowfall throughout much of January. Notably, picturesque locales like Gulmarg have now been enveloped in a pristine white veneer following recent snowfall, effectively bringing an end to a prolonged dry spell that had persisted for two months across the valley.

Communities across various towns including Pahalgam, Sonmarg, Gurez, Macchil, Karnah Doodpathri, and Shopian have welcomed the weekend's snowfall, marking the onset of "Chilla-i-Kalan," a harsh 40-day winter period characterized by plummeting temperatures and the congelation of water bodies.

Analyzing the latest spatial data procured from the European Space Agency, it's evident that the recent snowfall has significantly expanded the snow-covered expanse, with an estimated additional area of up to 8 square kilometers transformed into a winter wonderland. In Gulmarg alone, approximately 10 cm or 4 inches of snowfall was recorded, according to the most recent bulletin from the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Srinagar.

Further insights gleaned from private weather data aggregator Snow Forecast indicate intermittent light snowfall occurring at an elevation of 2,652 meters, merely 2 km east of Gulmarg. Situated within the Pir Panjal Range of the Himalayas, the renowned Gulmarg Ski Resort, nestled amidst breathtaking landscapes, offers unparalleled skiing opportunities across its expansive terrain, attracting enthusiasts from far and wide.

For much of January, a sense of despondency pervaded Gulmarg as the absence of snow left barren grounds, disappointing skiers, snowboarders, and tourists alike. However, with the recent snowfall, the ambiance has transformed, with visitors reveling in the joyous atmosphere, engaging in playful activities like snowball fights, and capturing cherished moments against the picturesque backdrop.

Beyond Gulmarg, other regions like Sonmarg have also witnessed fresh snowfall, as evidenced by satellite imagery showcasing an approximate 30 km radius blanketed in pristine snow. In areas like Pahalgam, nestled amidst lofty peaks, satellite imagery vividly portrays a stark contrast between snow-covered highlands and the relatively snow-scarce lower valley regions.

Capitalizing on the fresh snowfall, winter sports enthusiasts have eagerly resumed activities, breathing new life into the region's tourism sector. Notably, events like the Natural Ice Climbing Wall Competition in Pahalgam underscore the area's potential for adventure sports and outdoor recreation.

As the Thajiwas Glacier, situated at a lofty altitude of 9,186 feet, glistens with renewed vigor following heavy snowfall, the visual spectacle serves as a testament to Kashmir's enduring natural beauty and seasonal allure.

Earlier reports by India Today had highlighted a substantial precipitation deficit, attributed in part to the El Nino phenomenon, which historically impacts weather patterns across Southeast Asia. However, forecasts indicate a shift, with anticipated light to moderate rain or snowfall across Jammu and Kashmir in the coming days, offering respite from the dry spell while necessitating caution due to potential road closures in higher elevations.
