The Coast Guard saves 182 pilgrims as their ferry capssizes off the coast of Kakdwip, Bengal

The unfortunate incident unfolded as a ferry, named 'Swasthya Sathi,' was in the process of transporting approximately 400 pilgrims from the Gangasagar Mela at Sagar Island to Kakdwip when it encountered unfavorable conditions, leading to it running aground. In response to this crisis, the Indian Coast Guard (ICG) swiftly executed a rescue operation, saving 182 stranded pilgrims from the stranded vessel off the coast of West Bengal's Kakdwip.

The alert about the distressed ferry was initially conveyed to the operations team of the ICG by the District Magistrate of South 24 Parganas during the early hours of Tuesday. In a rapid and coordinated response, two Air Cushion Vehicles, commonly known as hovercrafts, were dispatched to provide assistance. These hovercrafts not only successfully evacuated the 182 pilgrims in distress but also guided the ferry, with the remaining pilgrims on board, to a secure destination.

In a proactive measure to ensure the safety of individuals participating in the annual Gangasagar Mela, the ICG strategically deployed sea-borne units at various critical locations. Additionally, a rapid lifesaving action team of divers was positioned at the mela site, enhancing the readiness to address potential emergencies. An officer from the ICG Ship Frazerganj was stationed on Sagar Island to facilitate coordination with the state administration and oversee safety aspects along the seafront.

The Gangasagar Mela, a highly esteemed religious gathering held in Sagardwip, West Bengal, attracts thousands of pilgrims who engage in the sacred ritual of taking a holy dip in the river Ganges. This mela, held during the winter season, holds significant cultural and religious importance. Notably, it is the second-largest pilgrimage in India after the Kumbh Mela, occurring once every four years. According to West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, the Gangasagar Mela witnessed a substantial turnout this year, with over 70 lakh people participating in the religious event.
