In an exclusive interview with India Today TV, Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal lauded India as one of Ukraine's foremost economic allies and hailed Prime Minister Narendra Modi as a "global leader". He urged India to assist Ukraine in its economic recovery efforts post-war by facilitating the return of students and reinstating trade relations to pre-war levels.
Expressing admiration for PM Modi's efforts in promoting global peace, Shmyhal emphasized the significance of India's support and humanitarian aid extended to Ukraine during its time of need.
"PM Modi's leadership is paramount on the global stage, working tirelessly towards fostering world peace. With a significant portion of Ukraine now experiencing tranquility, I earnestly appeal to India to aid our economic resurgence by facilitating the return of students and fostering business ties as before," Shmyhal stated.
In 2022, India initiated 'Operation Ganga' to repatriate Indians stranded in Ukraine, successfully evacuating approximately 18,000 nationals, including students, under this initiative.
The Ukrainian economy, grappling with the repercussions of its conflict with Russia since February 2022, has endured substantial setbacks, witnessing a contraction of over 30 percent, marking its most severe economic downturn in three decades.
The ongoing war has inflicted widespread devastation and loss of life, displacing millions of Ukrainians and escalating defense expenditures.
Shmyhal underscored Ukraine's fervent aspiration to join the European Union and NATO, emphasizing the country's unwavering commitment to this goal.
Furthermore, the Ukrainian Prime Minister urged international intervention to compel Russia to cease hostilities and appealed to Russian President Putin to liberate Ukrainian territories.
"While we are receiving assistance in terms of weaponry and humanitarian aid from our allies, the exigencies of the situation necessitate heightened support and assistance," Shmyhal remarked.
Extending congratulations to India on its 75th Republic Day, Shmyhal commended the nation's remarkable progress and lauded its steadfast adherence to democratic principles and the ethos of unity in diversity.
