Trinamool Congress and BJP spar over unclaimed central funding

The Trinamool Congress has levied accusations against a BJP minister, alleging her non-compliance with a scheduled meeting concerning unresolved central funds, particularly related to the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MNREGA). The political discourse between the ruling Trinamool Congress in West Bengal and the BJP escalated as TMC representative Mahua Moitra accused BJP minister Sadhvi Niranjan Jyoti of evading a meeting with the TMC delegation.

In response to these allegations, Sadhvi Niranjan Jyoti refuted the claims, asserting that she had waited for the TMC delegation for an extended period of 2.5 hours before proceeding with her pre-existing commitments. Additionally, the BJP leader insinuated corruption within the Mamata Banerjee-led state government, suggesting the potential involvement of a close associate in a suspected mismanagement of MGNREGA funds.

The crux of the ongoing disagreement centers on the release of MNREGA funds, with the Bengal government accusing the Central government of deliberately withholding these funds. This contentious issue prompted TMC leader Abhishek Banerjee to organize a rally in Delhi to draw attention to the matter.

In a countermove, the BJP has reciprocated by accusing the TMC government of diverting central funds designated for both the Pradhan Mantri Aawas Yojna and MGNREGA.

In the preceding month, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee met with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, pressing for the release of pending central funds to the state. During the meeting, the prime minister suggested a collaborative approach, proposing that state officials and Centre officials convene to collectively address and resolve the outstanding issues.
