US Polls: As the Iowa caucus draws near, Trump and DeSantis intensify their criticism of Nikki Haley

As the first-in-the-nation voting in Iowa approaches, Nikki Haley, vying for the Republican presidential nomination, faces intensified attacks from her rivals. The heightened barrage of news releases, attack ads, and escalating verbal exchanges coincides with the impending Iowa caucuses, where Haley and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis are striving for a distant second place behind former President Donald Trump.

While Trump has long directed his focus on DeSantis, positioning himself as the party's prime contender to unseat Trump, there has been a recent shift in Trump's campaign strategy, increasingly targeting Haley. Trump's criticisms label her as a "sellout," scrutinizing her positions on taxes and the US-Mexico border.

Haley's campaign contends that Trump's intensified attention indicates his concern about her gaining ground in the race. As DeSantis and Haley gear up for their first one-on-one debate, tensions escalate, with DeSantis also seizing the opportunity to criticize Haley. This comes after Haley's remarks in New Hampshire, suggesting an anticipation of having to "correct" Iowa caucus-goers' decisions, indicating a potential lack of confidence in her placement.

DeSantis deems Haley's comments as "insulting" to Iowa voters, and Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds, who has endorsed DeSantis, emphasizes trust in Iowans to make independent decisions without the need for "corrections."

Beyond the Iowa dynamics, DeSantis criticizes Haley for omitting slavery in a recent response about the causes of the Civil War, while Trump's allies recirculate old clips portraying Haley's stance on immigrants entering the US illegally. Trump's super PAC, Make America Great Again Inc, contributes to the offensive by characterizing Haley as weak on immigration in an ad that lumps her together with President Joe Biden.

Haley's campaign counters these attacks with a fact check, highlighting her nuanced approach to border security, which includes advocating for more than just a wall and implementing E-Verify as governor. Haley's team interprets Trump's heightened focus on her as a sign of nervousness, claiming that the race is evolving into a two-person contest between Nikki and Trump.
