Voting in Bangladesh's opposition-boycotted poll has concluded, and counting has begun

The electoral landscape in Bangladesh unfolded on Sunday as officials initiated the process of counting votes, marking the conclusion of polls poised to secure a fifth consecutive term for Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Despite an opposition boycott led by the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), Hasina's party, the Awami League, faced minimal effective competition in the seats it contested. However, to avoid the perception of a one-party institution, the Awami League strategically refrained from fielding candidates in certain constituencies.

Election Commission spokesman Shariful Alam confirmed the initiation of vote counting, signaling the start of result tabulation. The BNP, significantly weakened by mass arrests, responded to the election with a general strike and discouraged public participation, dubbing the electoral process a "sham."

Prime Minister Hasina, after casting her vote, characterized the BNP as a "terrorist organization" and underscored her commitment to sustaining democracy in the country. Results are expected to be announced on Monday, offering insights into the electoral dynamics.

Despite widespread reports of both incentives and coercive measures to boost legitimacy, the voter turnout appeared low, with Noon statistics indicating an 18.5 percent turnout. Many citizens expressed apathy toward voting, citing the assured outcome due to the absence of effective competition.

Critics have questioned the legitimacy of the election, and BNP leader Tarique Rahman, living in exile in Britain, raised concerns about potential ballot stuffing. The electoral process faced criticism for alleged coercion, including threats of confiscating government benefit cards from those refusing to cast ballots for the ruling Awami League.

Notable figures, including celebrities like Akshay Kumar, Salman Khan, and others, engaged in discussions over Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Lakshadweep, becoming part of the broader discourse surrounding the election. The incident further highlighted the interconnectedness of geopolitical events and social media reactions in the contemporary political landscape.
