The Punjab Police successfully unraveled the mystery surrounding the tragic demise of Dalbir Singh, an Arjuna awardee and deputy superintendent with the Punjab Armed Police (PAP), within 48 hours after discovering his lifeless body with a fatal gunshot wound to the head on Wednesday. The law enforcement authorities swiftly apprehended the alleged perpetrator, who reportedly shot the deputy superintendent using his own service weapon following a confrontation.
Dalbir Singh, a former athlete stationed in Sangrur, met a tragic end at the age of 54, with his body discovered on a road near a canal in Basti Bawa Khel of Jalandhar on Monday. Director General of Punjab Police Gaurav Yadav expressed condolences, stating, "Punjab Police has worked out the case in two days with the arrest of the culprit and seizure of the murder weapon. May his soul RIP! Our prayers are with the family, relatives, and everyone who worked with him."
Upon learning about Dalbir Singh's demise, his brother, Ranjit Singh, was informed by the police about discovering his brother's body under mysterious circumstances with head injuries. The body was found near a canal by a police officer returning from duty.
The accused, identified as Vijay Kumar, an autorickshaw driver, was arrested by the police for allegedly shooting DSP Dalbir Singh during an altercation. The arrest transpired late on Wednesday night, with authorities seizing the government-issued firearm used in the crime.
The breakthrough in the case was achieved through a meticulous review of footage from various CCTV cameras. The investigation traced a recording from one of the cameras depicting the victim boarding an autorickshaw, prompting authorities to identify and track down the vehicle based on its number.
According to sources, DSP Dalbir Singh and the autorickshaw driver, Vijay Kumar, engaged in consuming alcohol at an illicit wine shop in Kapurthala Chowk. In an inebriated state, Singh purportedly handed over his service pistol to Kumar and engaged in a heated argument, hurling abuses at the accused. Tragically, during the altercation, Vijay Kumar allegedly used Singh's service pistol to shoot him in the head, resulting in the untimely demise of the Arjuna awardee.
