A convent school located in Mangaluru became the center of protests orchestrated by students and right-wing factions following a complaint lodged by a parent, alleging instances of "insulting Hindu gods" and purported attempts to induce religious conversion among students.
The protests erupted after a parental grievance lodged with local law enforcement, which accused a faculty member of the Catholic girls' institution of various transgressions, including "insulting Hindu gods," fostering anti-Hindu sentiments among students, and orchestrating schemes aimed at converting pupils from diverse religious backgrounds to Christianity.
The complaint further contended that the school disseminated misinformation regarding Prime Minister Narendra Modi's involvement in the Godhra incident and the case of Bilkis Bano, portraying these events in a disconcerting light to students.
Additionally, the complaint alleged that one teacher propagated the notion that Lord Ram was merely a mythical figure, stirring further controversy.
Subsequently, BJP MLA Vedavyas Kamath, representing Dakshin Kannada, in conjunction with members of Bajrang Dal and VHP, confronted the school administration, questioning their support for the implicated teacher and urging their expulsion.
Amidst the confrontation, Kamath underscored concerns regarding the erosion of moral integrity and the purported agenda of religious conversion allegedly perpetuated by the teacher in question. He emphasized the need for preserving Hindu values and denounced actions deemed disrespectful towards Hindu beliefs.
Footage circulating online depicted VHP members and students brandishing saffron flags while chanting 'Jai Shri Ram' slogans outside the school premises, further underscoring the intensity of the protests.
Acknowledging the gravity of the situation, the Mangalore Deputy Director of Public Instruction (DDPI) has launched an investigation into the matter to ascertain the veracity of the allegations and determine appropriate measures to address the concerns raised.
