A team of doctors hailing from the Paediatrics department at the All India Institute of Medical Science (AIIMS), Bhubaneswar, showcased their medical expertise by rescuing the life of a 9-year-old boy. The child's perilous situation arose when he inadvertently aspirated a four-centimeter-long stitching needle, which became lodged in his lung.
Employing advanced medical techniques, the pediatric team executed a bronchoscopic intervention procedure, successfully extracting the needle and ensuring the child's survival. This remarkable feat marked the first instance in Odisha where such a delicate foreign object was removed without resorting to invasive surgery, as highlighted in a statement released by the hospital.
Hailing from the neighboring state of West Bengal, the child underwent treatment at AIIMS Bhubaneswar under the diligent care of a team of pediatricians led by Dr. Rashmi Ranjan Das, Dr. Krishna M Gulla, Dr. Ketan, and Dr. Ramakrishna. Their collective efforts, coupled with the sophisticated medical procedures employed, enabled the safe extraction of the needle from the child's left lower lobe bronchus lateral segment.
The meticulous procedure, lasting approximately one hour, was overseen by the hospital's Executive Director, Dr. Ashutosh Biswas, who expressed satisfaction with the successful outcome. Post-procedure, the child continues to receive attentive care at the hospital and is steadily progressing towards recovery.
Dr. Krishna M Gulla, shedding light on the innovative medical approach, emphasized the significance of the less invasive flexible bronchoscopy technique utilized in removing sharp airway foreign bodies. He underscored AIIMS Bhubaneswar's commitment to pediatric care, highlighting the presence of a dedicated Pediatric Pulmonology and ICU team capable of performing bronchoscopic interventions, catering to patients ranging from neonates to adolescents. This comprehensive care offered under a single roof stands as a testament to the hospital's unwavering dedication to pediatric health, providing unparalleled services not readily available in Odisha's private healthcare sector.
