AM Khanwilkar, a former Supreme Court judge, was sworn in as Lokpal chairperson

On a momentous occasion at the prestigious Rashtrapati Bhavan, former Supreme Court justice Ajay Manikrao Khanwilkar, aged 66, officially assumed the pivotal role of chairperson of the Lokpal, India's anti-corruption ombudsman. The ceremony, presided over by President Droupadi Murmu, underscored the solemnity and importance of this appointment, highlighting its significance in the nation's governance landscape.

Justice Khanwilkar's illustrious tenure in the judiciary, from May 13, 2016, to July 29, 2022, brings a wealth of experience and expertise to his new position. Having served on the apex court, he has a deep understanding of legal intricacies and a firm commitment to upholding justice and fairness.

The vacancy in the chairmanship of the Lokpal persisted for nearly two years following the retirement of Pinaki Chandra Ghose on May 27, 2022. This prolonged gap underscored the critical need to fill the position and reinvigorate the fight against corruption in the country's governance mechanisms.

With Justice Khanwilkar's appointment, there is renewed hope and optimism for the Lokpal to effectively discharge its duties in safeguarding against corruption at all levels of government. This significant development reaffirms India's commitment to transparency and accountability and signals a proactive approach to addressing systemic challenges.

The ceremony at the Rashtrapati Bhavan symbolizes a new chapter in the nation's anti-corruption efforts, marked by a renewed sense of purpose and determination to uphold the principles of integrity and ethical governance.
