An Assam politician's photo resting on a mound of cash sparks controversy; a BJP associate explains

The viral photo depicting Assamese politician Benjamin Basumatary sleeping on a bed surrounded by Rs 500 notes has sparked controversy, raising questions about its authenticity and the politician's conduct. Basumatary, a suspended member of the United People's Party Liberal (UPPL), which is an ally of the BJP in Assam, was the subject of the contentious image.

However, the UPPL swiftly responded to the controversy, clarifying that Basumatary is no longer associated with the party. Pramod Boro, President of the UPPL, disclosed that Basumatary had been suspended from the party on January 10, 2024, following disciplinary action initiated after a letter from the Harisingha Block Committee, UPPL, on January 5, 2024.

Furthermore, Basumatary faced additional repercussions as the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) suspended and removed him from the post of VCDC Chairman on February 10, 2024.

Regarding the photo, the UPPL emphasized that it was captured five years ago during a gathering where Basumatary was socializing with friends. The party contended that Basumatary was being "blackmailed" with the photo and clarified that the cash visible in the image belonged to Basumatary's sister.

The UPPL unequivocally stated that Basumatary's actions are his own responsibility, absolving the party of any accountability for his personal conduct.

While the authenticity of the photo remains unverified, the UPPL's swift response sought to distance the party from the controversy and underscore its commitment to ethical conduct and discipline among its members.
