"I'm broke," says Mallikarjun Kharge, referring to the BJP's freezing of Congress' bank accounts

Mallikarjun Kharge, the Congress party chief, has suggested that the party is facing a financial crisis, alleging that the BJP-led NDA government has frozen its bank accounts and imposed hefty fines through the Income Tax Department.

Kharge highlighted that the Congress party's bank accounts containing donations from the public have been frozen by the government, and significant fines have been levied by the Income Tax Department. He accused the BJP of obstructing the Congress party's financial resources while failing to disclose the substantial amounts received through electoral bonds, despite Supreme Court directives.

Kharge emphasized the importance of standing together to secure victory for the Congress in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, framing it as vital to safeguarding the Constitution and democracy in India.

He criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the BJP for allegedly misusing power, exemplified by the naming of a cricket stadium in Gujarat after Modi himself, which Kharge deemed inappropriate for a living individual.

Kharge expressed confidence in the electorate of Kalaburagi (Gulbarga), his constituency in the 2019 elections, stating that they are determined to correct their decision and ensure victory for the Congress party in the upcoming polls.

Earlier, Congress Treasurer Ajay Maken had reported that the party's bank accounts were frozen. However, a tax tribunal subsequently clarified that there were no restrictions on the party accessing its bank accounts.

The allegations made by Kharge shed light on the challenges faced by the Congress party in terms of financial resources, highlighting the broader political dynamics and the ongoing contestations within India's political landscape.
