'Said nothing wrong': A Congress MP defends his'separate country for South' statement

In February of this year, Karnataka Congress MP DK Suresh found himself embroiled in controversy when he advocated for a "separate country" for South India. However, on Thursday, he stood firm behind his assertion, insisting that his statement resonates with the sentiments of the public. He argued that the perceived neglect from the Central government towards Karnataka, particularly in terms of funding crucial projects, justified his stance.

Defending his earlier statement, DK Suresh maintained, "I have said nothing wrong. This thought is there in the public's mind." He pointed to what he perceived as discriminatory treatment from the Centre towards Karnataka, highlighting issues such as withheld funds for important initiatives, persistent drought conditions, and what he labeled as "step-motherly" treatment.

In February, DK Suresh's call for a "separate country" for South India stemmed from his assertion that Karnataka was not receiving its fair share of funds from the Centre. He contended that funds earmarked for the southern region were being diverted elsewhere, primarily to North India. He suggested that the prevailing situation, characterized by what he viewed as disproportionate allocation of resources favoring the Hindi-speaking regions, left South India with no choice but to demand autonomy.

Amidst his bid for re-election from the Bengaluru Rural constituency, DK Suresh reiterated his commitment to addressing the state's water scarcity issues, particularly through initiatives like the Mekedatu balancing reservoir project. He expressed optimism about obtaining clearance from the Centre for the project, which he emphasized as crucial for managing Karnataka's water resources effectively.

DK Suresh's nomination filing in Ramnagara, from the Bengaluru Rural seat, follows the footsteps of prominent political figures like former Prime Minister HD Deve Gowda and former Karnataka Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy, who previously represented the constituency. Assuring constituents of his dedication to resolving pressing issues, DK Suresh pledged to prioritize water management and infrastructure development, aiming to alleviate the water scarcity challenges faced by the Bangalore Rural region within a six-month timeframe.
