The Meta CTO talks on his early days at Facebook, when he didn't get enough sleep and didn't have any interests



When the film The Social Network debuted in 2010, it ignited widespread inspiration, fostering dreams of entrepreneurial success among many individuals. Portraying the early days of Facebook and Mark Zuckerberg's meteoric rise at the age of 19, the movie painted a glamorous picture of launching a company. As a result, aspirations to establish startups akin to Meta's current stature became commonplace. However, Meta's Chief Technology Officer, Andrew Bosworth, recently dispelled the notion of startup glamour in an interview, emphasizing the stark reality behind the scenes.

During a conversation on Lenny's Podcast, Bosworth delved into his experiences as one of the early engineers at Facebook, shedding light on the less glamorous aspects of startup life. He reminisced about the close-knit camaraderie among the early Facebook team, recounting how they often shared meals and resided near the office. However, Bosworth revealed that these communal meals weren't solely for enjoyment but rather a result of the immense workload they faced.

In stark contrast to the romanticized narratives often depicted in media, Bosworth underscored the sacrifices required to thrive in the startup environment. He candidly admitted to foregoing social activities and personal indulgences throughout much of his twenties. Bosworth also acknowledged the even greater sacrifices made by Zuckerberg, who embarked on the Facebook journey as a teenager, two years before Bosworth joined the company.

During the interview, Bosworth openly discussed the unhealthy habits and lifestyle adjustments he adopted during his startup tenure. He revealed working grueling 120-hour weeks, with minimal sleep and limited personal time for two years straight. Bosworth recalled the relentless demands of monitoring the platform for potential attacks every four hours, even at the expense of his sleep schedule.

Reflecting on his early days at Facebook, Bosworth highlighted the absence of traditional support structures available in established corporations. Unlike larger companies equipped with dedicated departments for payroll and HR, Bosworth navigated challenges independently, relying solely on his ingenuity and resources.

While Bosworth's journey ultimately propelled him to a leadership role at one of the tech industry's titans, he cautioned against idealizing the startup path. Despite its allure, Bosworth stressed that success in the startup world demands significant sacrifices, underscoring the importance of recognizing the realities behind the entrepreneurial facade.
