Children hurt and a 7-year-old girl died in a shooting in Chicago

A tragic shooting incident occurred in Chicago's South Side on Saturday night, resulting in the death of a seven-year-old girl and injuries to seven others, including two children. According to Chicago Police Department Deputy Chief Don Jerome, the girl was fatally shot in the head, while a one-year-old boy and a seven-year-old boy sustained multiple gunshot wounds and were listed in critical condition.

The incident took place on a block of 52nd Street near Damen Avenue, where victims, including adults aged between 19 and 40, were gathered outside for a family gathering. Police responded to reports of gunfire around 9 pm and provided immediate medical assistance to the injured, including applying tourniquets and chest seals.

The victims were subsequently transported to area hospitals by the Chicago Fire Department. Although the investigation is still in its early stages, witness testimonies indicated the presence of two possible shooters on foot.

Deputy Chief Jerome emphasized that the shooting was not a random act of violence but likely gang-related. He condemned the perpetrators' actions, especially considering the innocent children who were among the victims. He described the incident as horrific and unacceptable, affirming the commitment of law enforcement to address such violence in the city.
