Election Commission seizes Rs 4,650 crore ahead of polls, the largest amount ever

Even before the commencement of polling for the Lok Sabha elections on April 19, the Election Commission has reported a significant milestone, with authorities under its supervision seizing a staggering Rs 4,650 crore. This figure surpasses the total seizures made during the 2019 parliamentary polls.

According to the Election Commission, enforcement authorities have been consistently making seizures of over Rs 100 crore every day since March 1, leading up to the Lok Sabha elections.

In a statement, the poll body highlighted that with the 2024 general elections underway, it is on track to achieve the highest-ever seizures of inducements in the 75-year history of Lok Sabha elections in India.

The Election Commission credited the diligent efforts of flying squads, statistics surveillance teams, video viewing teams, and border checkposts, which have been operating round-the-clock to facilitate these seizures.

Furthermore, the commission emphasized that rigorous measures are being implemented to prevent the movement and distribution of cash, liquor, freebies, drugs, and narcotics during the electoral process.

The Lok Sabha elections are scheduled to be conducted in seven phases, spanning from April 19 to June 1. Results of the elections are expected to be announced on June 4.
