The recent seizure of arms, including foreign-made revolvers, in Sandeshkhali, West Bengal, has sparked controversy and raised questions about the involvement of central agencies. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has voiced skepticism about the origin of these arms, suggesting that they might have been brought in by central agencies without informing the state police.
Banerjee's remarks came after the CBI conducted searches in Sandeshkhali and seized a cache of arms, including foreign-made revolvers, during raids related to a January attack on an Enforcement Directorate team. The attack was allegedly instigated by a now-suspended Trinamool leader.
While the CBI, along with other agencies, conducted the searches, Banerjee questioned the transparency of the operation, highlighting the lack of information about the recovered arms and their origin. She also alleged that bombs were found inside the house of a BJP leader in Sandeshkhali.
The Trinamool Congress has raised concerns about the timing of the raids, accusing the BJP of orchestrating a plot to discredit the state government during the ongoing Lok Sabha polls. The party lodged a complaint with the Chief Electoral Officer, questioning the authenticity of the arms recovery and alleging that the raid was conducted at an "empty location" during the voting phase.
The controversy surrounding the arms seizure underscores the political tensions in West Bengal, with accusations flying between the ruling Trinamool Congress and the BJP, as well as concerns about the role of central agencies in the state's affairs.
