In Ratan Tata's will, share not only for siblings, but also for dog Tito and Butler

Ratan Tata, the celebrated industrialist and philanthropist, has extended his legacy of compassion beyond his human connections in his will. With an estate estimated at around Rs 10,000 crore, Tata ensured that not only his family and close staff are remembered, but also his beloved German Shepherd, Tito, who has been allotted a lifelong provision for "unlimited care." The endearing gesture is emblematic of Tata’s lifelong affection for dogs, which is well-documented; from supporting initiatives for stray animals to creating India’s first dedicated small animal hospital in Mumbai, Tata’s compassion for pets is unwavering.

Tata’s will specifies provisions for those closest to him, including his butler Subbiah, who served him faithfully for over 30 years, and executive assistant Shantanu Naidu, whose loan for overseas study Tata has generously waived. Naidu, a valued companion and partner in a venture to support companionship for seniors called Goodfellows, is one of many who benefited from Tata’s commitment to his associates. Tata’s cook, Rajan Shaw, has also been entrusted with Tito's care, marking the profound bond that Tata maintained with his staff. When traveling abroad, Tata made it a point to gift designer clothing to his loyal butler and cook, treating them as family.

Additionally, Tata’s will directs his 0.83% stake in Tata Sons, the group's holding company, to the Ratan Tata Endowment Foundation (RTEF), furthering his impact on charitable initiatives. His other assets include properties such as a beach bungalow in Alibaug and a two-story house on Mumbai’s Juhu Tara Road, as well as fixed deposits exceeding Rs 350 crore. His extensive collection of awards and recognitions will be donated to the Tata Central Archives, preserving his legacy for future generations.

Tata’s decision to prioritize both his employees and his pets is not a new facet of his character. In 2018, he notably declined an award from Prince Charles because one of his dogs was unwell, a gesture that deeply impressed the Prince, who remarked, "That’s the man Ratan is.” This legacy of kindness and respect reflects why Tata remains an admired figure, and his will stands as a testament to his enduring values of empathy, loyalty, and generosity.
