Shami and Axar have been dropped from India's Border-Gavaskar Trophy big team

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has announced an 18-man squad for the upcoming five-Test Border-Gavaskar Trophy series against Australia, set to commence on November 22 in Perth. The squad features some notable inclusions and omissions, with all-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy and fast bowler Harshit Rana receiving their maiden Test call-ups.

Regular players such as captain Rohit Sharma, vice-captain Jasprit Bumrah, and star batter Virat Kohli are retained in the squad. However, the selection committee, led by Ajit Agarkar, made some surprising decisions by excluding established players like Mohammed Shami and Axar Patel. Shami has been working on his fitness after undergoing heel surgery in February and has not played since the ODI World Cup last year. Despite showing signs of recovery, including bowling to Indian batters during a recent Test against New Zealand, he was ultimately left out of the squad.

Additionally, the team will not include Axar Patel, India's premier left-arm spinner, opting instead for a spin attack comprising R. Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja, and Washington Sundar. Sundar’s selection follows an impressive performance in his return match against New Zealand, where he took seven wickets in the first innings. Kuldeep Yadav was also omitted due to a chronic left groin issue, requiring rehabilitation at the National Cricket Academy.

Nitish Kumar Reddy’s inclusion marks a significant step for the young all-rounder, who has been with the team as a reserve during the home series against New Zealand. With Hardik Pandya unavailable, India is looking for a fast-bowling all-rounder, and Reddy’s recent standout performance in a T20I against Bangladesh has bolstered his selection. Harshit Rana, known for his pace and aggression during the IPL 2024 season with Kolkata Knight Riders, also earned his first Test call-up.

Mayank Yadav, another promising fast bowler, was initially considered for selection but was ruled out due to injury. Meanwhile, Abhimanyu Easwaran has been rewarded for his consistent performances in domestic cricket, including four centuries in his last four first-class matches.

The squad for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy includes a blend of experienced players and emerging talent, reflecting India's strategic approach as they prepare for a challenging series in Australia. Ruturaj Gaikwad, who will captain India A on their upcoming tour of Australia, was not included in this Test squad.
