Priyamani has once again spoken out about the relentless online hate she and her husband, Mustafa Raj, have endured ever since they announced their engagement in 2017. Despite being happily married for nearly seven years, the actress revealed that the negativity and criticism surrounding their interfaith marriage have not faded. The Jawan star, who has always been vocal about her personal life, shared that she still receives unwarranted backlash from trolls who question her relationship due to religious differences.
Recalling the early days of the hate campaign, Priyamani said that when she first shared her engagement news, it was purely to celebrate a joyful moment with her well-wishers. However, she was shocked to see how quickly the announcement was met with an influx of hate, with people accusing her of love jihad—a term often misused to push divisive narratives about interfaith marriages. Some trolls even went to the extent of making bizarre and deeply offensive comments about their future children, claiming they would be linked to terrorist organizations.
Speaking about the toll this negativity took on her, Priyamani admitted that it initially affected her mental health. “For two or three days, it really got to me because I was constantly receiving hate messages. I understand that I am a public figure and people will have opinions, but why drag my husband into this? He is not a part of the industry, yet he is being targeted simply because he married me. Even today, if I post anything with him on social media, nine out of ten comments are not about us as a couple but about our religion or caste,” she said in an interview with Filmfare.
Despite the criticism, Priyamani has remained focused on her career. The actress was recently seen in Officer on Duty, where she starred alongside Kunchako Boban. She is currently filming Jana Nayagan, which is Thalapathy Vijay’s last film before his official political entry, making it one of the most anticipated projects of her career. Fans are also eagerly awaiting her return as Suchi in The Family Man Season 3, where she will once again share the screen with Manoj Bajpayee.
While Priyamani acknowledges that online hate is an unfortunate part of being in the public eye, she has learned to rise above it and focus on her work and personal happiness. “At the end of the day, I know what truly matters. People can say whatever they want, but I am happy, and that’s what is most important,” she concluded.
