According to DeepSeek, its R1 version can execute math, coding, and logic just as well as ChatGPT o3 and Gemini 2.5 Pro

This is a really interesting development in the AI landscape, especially given the geopolitical and ethical implications around AI models.

DeepSeek, a Chinese startup, surprised many earlier this year with its R1 model, which offered performance close to heavyweight AI models like ChatGPT and Google’s Gemini, but at a fraction of the cost. Now, with its latest update (called R1-0528), DeepSeek claims significant improvements in reasoning, math, programming, and general logic abilities — even stating it’s approaching the level of leading models such as O3 and Gemini 2.5 Pro. They highlight better inference depth, less hallucination (fewer inaccurate or fabricated answers), and a smoother “vibe coding” experience.

However, alongside these technical improvements, there’s a clear trade-off: increased content censorship. A developer on X (formerly Twitter) who tested the new R1 model criticizes it for being the most heavily censored version so far, especially regarding free speech and sensitive political topics related to China. The model reportedly dodges direct answers on issues like the Xinjiang internment camps, often parroting official government positions instead of providing a balanced or critical perspective. This means that while the model excels technically, its responses on politically sensitive matters are tightly controlled.

The developer also used a tool called SpeechMap to compare how different models handle sensitive subjects, finding DeepSeek’s new model significantly more restricted than others. This has raised concerns that, despite advances in AI capability, DeepSeek’s R1-0528 represents a regression for free speech and open dialogue, reinforcing government censorship rather than enabling independent or critical thinking.

This reflects a wider global discussion about AI development where technological progress sometimes comes with compromises on openness, ethics, and freedom of expression—especially when national interests and state policies influence AI behavior.
