Anil Kumble believes that Jasprit Bumrah should captain India's Test team during their tour of England

Following Rohit Sharma's unexpected retirement from Test cricket, the search for India's new Test captain has intensified, especially with the five-match series against England set to begin on June 20. Anil Kumble, former head coach of India, has supported Jasprit Bumrah as a potential candidate to lead the team during this crucial series.

Key Points:

  • Jasprit Bumrah: Despite the challenges posed by his injury history and the toll of fast bowling, Kumble believes Bumrah should captain the team, at least for the England series. While acknowledging that it’s tough for a fast bowler to play a full series, Kumble stated that if Bumrah's fitness holds up, he would be a strong leader. He also emphasized that in case of injury or fatigue, the vice-captain would step in.

  • Shubman Gill: At just 25 years old, Gill has emerged as another strong leadership candidate, especially after being appointed vice-captain in India’s white-ball teams. His leadership qualities have been further highlighted by his success as captain of Gujarat Titans in IPL 2025, where he led the team to the top of the table. His proactive approach on the field and sharp game sense have impressed coaches, including Parthiv Patel.

  • KL Rahul: A more experienced option, Rahul has led India in the past and is currently in good form. At 33, he offers a steady hand and could be a reliable choice for the short- to medium-term. His leadership experience, both in domestic and international cricket, makes him a viable contender.

  • Rishabh Pant: While Pant remains a key figure in India’s Test team, his leadership potential could be impacted by his relationship with new head coach Gautam Gambhir, especially after his return from injury. His candidacy will depend on how he fits into the new setup.

The Big Question:

With Rohit Sharma's surprise retirement and a challenging England tour ahead, India faces a pivotal leadership decision. Each candidate brings a different set of strengths, with Bumrah and Gill emerging as the frontrunners, though Rahul remains a strong option as well.
