As severe rain batters the Northeast, five people are dead, and Assam is under a red alert


The Indian monsoon is rapidly advancing, bringing with it widespread and intense rainfall across multiple regions, resulting in casualties, displacement, infrastructure damage, and red alerts in several states.

Current Impact Overview:

  • Northeast India:

    • Mizoram: Landslides and house collapses in Lawngtlai and Aizawl; 1 death and multiple injuries.

    • Tripura: One teenage boy drowned; 57 families moved to relief camps.

    • Meghalaya: Three deaths reported due to a landslide, drowning, and a tree fall; over 1,000 people affected across 25 villages.

    • Assam: Severe waterlogging and flash floods in Guwahati; red alert for heavy rain remains active.

    • Sikkim: Landslides in Theeng and Chungthang damaged several properties.

  • North India:

    • Delhi: Recorded its wettest May ever (188.9 mm rainfall), with zero heatwave days.

    • Himachal Pradesh: Hailstorms in Shimla; orange and yellow alerts for the next 48 hours.

  • South India:

    • Karnataka: Heaviest May rain in 125 years; a landslide in Mangaluru killed two, including a child.

    • Kerala: Intense rainfall and winds wreaked havoc in Thrissur, Kannur, and Kasaragod—flooded homes, power outages, and fallen trees.

South India:

  • Widespread rainfall with thunderstorms and gusty winds (40–50 kmph).

  • Extremely heavy rain likely over Kerala and Mahe on May 30.

  • Other affected areas: Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Telangana, Coastal Andhra Pradesh, South Interior Karnataka, Rayalaseema (till June 2).

Northwest India:

  • Scattered to widespread rain with thunderstorms (40–50 kmph).

  • Thundersqualls (50–60 kmph) likely over Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, and Himachal Pradesh on May 30 and June 1.

  • Dust storms over Rajasthan and adjacent regions from June 2–5.

Northeast India:

  • Persistent rainfall over 7 days.

  • Heavy to very heavy rain in Assam, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Tripura, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur.

  • Exceptionally heavy rainfall (30+ cm) expected in Meghalaya on May 30.

West India:

  • Scattered moderate rainfall with thunderstorms in Konkan, Goa, Gujarat, Madhya Maharashtra, and Marathwada on May 30.

  • Isolated heavy rain expected in Konkan and Goa through June 2.

East and Central India:

  • Widespread light to moderate rainfall in Vidarbha, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, Odisha, Jharkhand, and Gangetic West Bengal.

  • Thunderstorms with gusty winds (40–50 kmph); thundersqualls (up to 70 kmph) in Madhya Pradesh (May 30) and Vidarbha (June 2–3).
