'Disappointed' by Virat Kohli's retirement, Javed Akhtar urges him to change his mind

Veteran lyricist and writer Javed Akhtar has expressed his disappointment over Virat Kohli’s decision to retire from Test cricket. Akhtar, a long-time admirer of Kohli’s career, took to X on May 14 to share his thoughts, suggesting that the decision was premature. He urged the cricketer to reconsider, stating, “Obviously Virat knows better, but as an admirer of this great player, I am disappointed by his rather premature retirement from Test cricket. I think there is still a lot of cricket in him. I sincerely request him to reconsider his decision.”

Kohli announced his retirement from Test cricket on May 12, after a remarkable 14-year career. In an emotional Instagram post, Kohli reflected on his journey, writing, “It’s been 14 years since I first donned the baggy blue in Test cricket. Honestly, I could never have predicted the path this format would lead me on. It has tested me, shaped me, and taught me lessons I’ll cherish for life.”

Following the announcement, several Bollywood celebrities, including Katrina Kaif, Vicky Kaushal, Angad Bedi, and Aparshakti Khurrana, also shared their dismay and expressed how disheartening they found Kohli’s retirement decision.
