If the board loses faith, Ruben Amorim promises to leave Manchester United without compensation

Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim has openly stated he is willing to walk away from the club without demanding any compensation if the board loses faith in him following their Europa League final defeat. United’s season ended in disappointment after a 1-0 loss to Tottenham Hotspur on May 22, a result that dashed their hopes of UEFA Champions League qualification and intensified pressure on the Portuguese manager.

The only goal came in the 42nd minute from Brennan Johnson, whose shot deflected off United’s Luke Shaw and wrong-footed goalkeeper Andr Onana. This setback compounded an already poor Premier League campaign that saw Manchester United finish 16th — one of their worst in recent history.

Despite this, Amorim expressed his desire to continue in charge, emphasizing that he will not quit voluntarily but will step down without a fuss if the club’s leadership or fans feel he is not the right fit.

“I have nothing to show to the fans, so in this moment it is a little bit of faith...Let’s see. I am always open. If the board and fans feel I am not the right guy, I will go the next day without any conversation about compensation, but I will not quit,” Amorim said.

He remained confident about his approach and refused to alter his methods, saying, “I am really confident on my job. And as you see I will not change anything in the way I do things. I am not going to talk about the future, tonight we need to deal with the pain of losing this match... It was clear we were the better team, then we managed not to score again. The guys tried everything to win the game. In the future, we can assess.”

Manchester United entered the Europa League final undefeated in the competition, buoyed by a remarkable 7-1 aggregate win over Athletic Bilbao in the semi-finals. However, a critical defensive lapse and a lack of sharpness in front of goal hindered their comeback attempts against Spurs.

With no chance of finishing in the top five in the Premier League, Amorim admitted that his focus has shifted to giving younger players experience in the league and making a strong push in European competition. Nonetheless, the failure to win silverware and secure Champions League qualification puts his future under significant scrutiny.

Amorim arrived at Old Trafford after a successful stint at Sporting CP, following the club’s decision to part ways with Erik ten Hag. But so far, the former Portuguese champion has struggled to replicate that success with Manchester United. Whether the board will back him for another season remains uncertain amid mounting pressure and speculation.
