Diljit Dosanjh’s debut at the Met Gala 2025 may have been fashionably late—but it came with a backstory involving none other than Shakira. In a recently released behind-the-scenes video, Diljit offered fans a candid look at his journey to fashion’s biggest night, including a surprising detail: Shakira’s last-minute wardrobe malfunction was the reason for his delayed red carpet arrival.
In the 13-minute video, Diljit is seen preparing with his team—trying on his regal outfit the day before, working out, and dealing with last-minute event chaos. While joking with his crew, he revealed,
“Shakira ki emergency ki wajah se sada kaam suffer hogaya. But it is okay. Hips don’t lie, and she doesn’t lie (laughs).”
Later, just before his official Met Gala entrance, Diljit explains that he was supposed to appear alongside Shakira, but her Prabal Gurung-designed dress had a broken zipper, causing a delay.
“They’re not taking us to the main area. All the action is happening backstage,” he says. “Take us to the stage! I guess Shakira’s dress zipper broke—that’s why we’re late.” He adds playfully, “I knew we’d be late because of Shakira.”
Despite the hiccup, Diljit made an unforgettable debut. His ensemble, designed by Prabal Gurung, paid tribute to Maharaja Bhupinder Singh of Patiala, with a cape embroidered with the map of Punjab, a turban, and a diamond-and-emerald necklace reminiscent of the Maharaja’s legendary Cartier collection.
In an earlier interview, Diljit said:
“I’m trying to bring Punjab to the Met Gala red carpet.”
With this appearance, Diljit became the first turbaned artist to attend the Met Gala, making a historic statement in both fashion and cultural representation—blending Punjabi pride with high fashion on one of the world’s grandest stages.
