Tapan Kumar Deka, head of the Intelligence Bureau, receives a one-year extension till June 2026


Tapan Kumar Deka, the current Director of the Intelligence Bureau (IB), has received a one-year extension in service until June 30, 2026, as per an order issued by the Personnel Ministry on Tuesday.

Key Details of the Extension:

  • The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet approved the extension.

  • This is in relaxation of service rules, specifically FR 56(d) and Rule 16(1A) of the All India Services (Death-cum-Retirement Benefits) Rules, 1958.

  • The extension is beyond June 30, 2025, or until further orders, whichever comes earlier.

  • This is Deka’s second extension, following a prior one granted in 2024.

About Tapan Kumar Deka:

  • Batch: 1988 IPS, Himachal Pradesh cadre.

  • Current Role: Director, Intelligence Bureau since June 2022.

  • Career Focus: Spent the majority of his career in the IB, specializing in counter-terrorism.

  • Key Roles:

    • Served as Operations Joint Director during the height of Indian Mujahideen activity.

    • Played a pivotal role in neutralizing IM operatives across India.

    • Led operations during major terror incidents, including:

      • Pathankot Air Base attack (2015–16)

      • Pulwama attack (2019)

    • Worked extensively on terror cases in Jammu & Kashmir, including targeted killings in the Valley.

  • Was promoted to Special Director in the IB in June 2023, before his directorial appointment.

Deka’s extension underscores the government’s continued confidence in his leadership during a time of evolving national security challenges, especially with ongoing concerns related to terrorism, internal security, and external threats. His tenure has been marked by operational efficiency and discreet strategic handling of sensitive issues.
