India achieved a remarkable feat at the Archery World Cup Stage 2 in Shanghai, returning with three medals, including a prestigious gold, on Saturday, May 10. The men’s compound archery team spearheaded the campaign, with Abhishek Verma, Ojas Deotale, and Rishabh Yadav delivering a composed and clinical performance in the final. In a thrilling encounter, they triumphed over Mexico, securing a 232–228 victory to claim the gold medal. This win demonstrated India’s rising dominance in the compound discipline, adding another historic chapter to the nation’s archery success.
The final was an intense back-and-forth battle against a strong Mexican team. However, the Indian trio remained calm under pressure and showcased their precision and skill during the final ends, clinching victory and ensuring their place at the top of the podium.
In the women's compound team final, India’s Jyothi Surekha Vennam, Madhura Dhamangaonkar, and Chikitha Taniparthi fought valiantly but ultimately settled for silver. They faced a superior Mexican team, who dominated the contest from the very beginning, winning with a 234–221 scoreline. Despite the loss, the Indian women’s team earned commendation for their strong efforts on the world stage.
Meanwhile, India’s compound mixed team, featuring Abhishek Verma and Madhura Dhamangaonkar, bounced back from an earlier setback in the competition. The duo claimed the bronze medal, defeating Malaysia in a dominant performance during the third-place match, thus adding another podium finish to India’s growing archery credentials.
These podium finishes follow India's successful campaign at Stage 1 of the Archery World Cup in the USA, where the country bagged four medals, including a silver in the men's recurve team event and a bronze by up-and-coming archer Dhiraj Bommadevara in the individual recurve category.
With compound archery set to make its Olympic debut in the mixed team format at the 2028 Los Angeles Games, India’s recent performances provide genuine optimism for the country's prospects in the sport. The nation’s rising archery prowess makes India a strong contender for its first-ever Olympic medal in the sport, with the future looking promising as athletes continue to excel on the international stage.
