Tomorrow, 259 locations, including Delhi, Mumbai, and Chennai, will participate in a massive security practice

The nationwide security preparedness drill, set for May 7, will span across 259 locations in India, focusing on air raid sirens, blackouts, and emergency responses in the wake of heightened tensions with Pakistan. The drill, covering 244 Civil Defence Districts across the country, is the first of its kind since 1971 and comes after the deadly Pahalgam terror attack on April 22, which claimed the lives of 26 people.

The drill, overseen by Home Secretary Govind Mohan, aims to assess civil defense readiness, with special attention given to border regions and sensitive locations. Officials have coordinated the exercise to ensure that civilians are prepared for emergencies like air raids and blackouts, with emphasis on essential supplies such as medical kits, candles, torches, and cash.

Notably, over 100 locations in the designated districts are considered highly sensitive, particularly in border states like Jammu & Kashmir, Punjab, Rajasthan, and Assam. These districts will simulate multi-hazard scenarios to evaluate public response and overall preparedness.

Key cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Chandigarh, Patna, and Bengaluru, as well as border areas like Jammu & Kashmir and Punjab, will participate in the drill. The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) had directed the exercise following rising tensions between India and Pakistan, particularly after PM Modi's strong statements vowing retribution for the Pahalgam attack. Pakistan has responded with warnings of a "swift" retaliation, intensifying the atmosphere of military and diplomatic strain.

The exercise is part of a broader effort by the Indian government to prepare the nation for potential crises while sending a clear signal to Pakistan that India is vigilant and ready for any eventuality.
