A newlywed bride who gave a Volvo automobile and 800 grams of gold died as a result of dowry torture

The tragic death of 27-year-old Ridhanya in Tiruppur, Tamil Nadu, has once again cast a harsh light on the persistent and deadly issue of dowry-related abuse and domestic violence in India.

Ridhanya, daughter of a garment company owner, married Kavin Kumar, 28, in April this year. The marriage, like many in certain parts of India, was reportedly accompanied by a significant dowry: 100 sovereigns of gold (around 800 grams) and a luxury Volvo car worth ₹70 lakh. Despite the opulence of the wedding arrangement, Ridhanya’s life in her marital home soon turned into a nightmare.

According to police and media reports, Ridhanya endured relentless mental and physical abuse from her husband and in-laws, allegedly over dowry-related expectations and control. On Sunday, she left her home saying she was visiting a temple but instead consumed pesticide in her car, parked near Mondipalayam. Locals alerted authorities after noticing the car parked for an extended period. Upon investigation, Ridhanya was found dead, with foam at her mouth — consistent with poisoning.

Before her death, she sent seven heart-wrenching audio messages to her father via WhatsApp, detailing her trauma and apologizing for taking such a drastic step. In these messages, she accused her husband of physical torture and his family of constant mental harassment, saying she was pressured and silenced, with no one willing to listen to her pain. She expressed hopelessness, saying “everyone around me is acting” and “I don’t like this life.”

Her words reflect not just personal anguish but also a systemic failure: the normalization of abuse under the guise of preserving marriage, the silencing of women’s distress, and the social pressure to endure suffering in the name of family honor.

In response to the suicide, police arrested her husband Kavin Kumar, father-in-law Eswaramoorthy, and mother-in-law Chithradevi under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), including dowry harassment and abetment to suicide. The case has sparked public outrage in Tiruppur, with family members and relatives demanding swift and strict justice.

This heartbreaking incident highlights:

  • The urgent need for stricter enforcement of anti-dowry and domestic violence laws.

  • The importance of creating safe, responsive channels for women to report abuse without fear.

  • A broader societal reckoning with the culture of silence and endurance imposed on women in abusive marriages.

As the investigation proceeds, Ridhanya's final messages stand as a powerful reminder of the cost of ignoring warning signs and the deadly consequences of social apathy toward women’s suffering.

Her voice must not fade away. It must galvanize change.
