Day 4 box office receipts for Kamal Haasan's Thug Life: Rs 36 crore, the lowest in five years

Here’s a summary of the box office performance and reception of Thug Life, the recent film by Kamal Haasan and Mani Ratnam:

Thug Life opened to a lukewarm response and failed to reach the Rs 50 crore nett mark in its first weekend in India. According to Sacnilk, the film collected Rs 36.52 crore nett over four days, which is considered underwhelming given the star power involved.

Day-wise earnings breakdown:

  • Day 1: Rs 15.5 crore

  • Day 2: Rs 7.15 crore

  • Day 3: Rs 7.75 crore

  • Day 4: Rs 6.12 crore

  • Total: Rs 36.52 crore nett

The majority of the revenue came from the Tamil version. Although there were hopes for growth over the weekend, the numbers dipped on Sunday compared to Saturday.

Contextual comparison with Kamal Haasan’s recent films:

  • Indian 2 (3-day opening weekend): Rs 69.15 crore nett

  • Vikram (2022, 3-day opening weekend): Rs 110.8 crore nett

This makes Thug Life Kamal Haasan’s lowest opener in the past five years. Given the mixed reviews from critics and audiences, the film is currently seen as underperforming. If it does not sustain better numbers on weekdays, it may turn into a financial loss for Kamal Haasan, who also produced the film.

Notable cast and crew:

  • Cast: Kamal Haasan, Silambarasan (Simbu), Trisha Krishnan, Aishwarya Lekshmi, Ashok Selvan, Nasser, among others

  • Music: A.R. Rahman

  • Cinematography: Ravi K Chandran

  • Editing: Sreekar Prasad

The film’s emotional gangster drama theme and strong talent line-up have so far not translated into strong box office returns. The coming weekdays will be crucial to determine its final fate.
