The International Cricket Council (ICC) has announced updated Playing Conditions effective from July 2025, introducing key changes for both T20 Internationals and Test cricket.
T20I Powerplay Revisions for Shortened Matches
For rain-affected or truncated T20Is, the ICC has now specified exact powerplay overs to avoid rounding off:
-
6-over match: 1.5 overs of powerplay
-
7-over match: 2.1 overs
-
8-over match: 2.2 overs (previously rounded to 3)
-
9-over match: 2.4 overs
New Rules for Test Matches (2025–2027 WTC Cycle)
-
Stop Clock for Over Rate
-
60-second limit between overs
-
An electronic clock at the ground will count from 0 to 60
-
Teams get 2 warnings
-
On the 3rd delay, the batting side earns 5 penalty runs
-
Warnings reset after 80 overs in an innings
-
-
Deliberate Short Runs
-
If a batter runs short deliberately, the fielding captain can now choose which batter takes strike—aimed at discouraging misuse.
-
These new Test match regulations came into effect during the Sri Lanka vs Bangladesh Test in Galle, which marks the start of the 2025–2027 World Test Championship.
The ICC's changes seek to promote efficiency, fairness, and standardisation across formats.
