French Open: Mirra Andreeva advances, and Coco Gauff reaches her fifth consecutive quarterfinal

Coco Gauff advanced to her fifth consecutive French Open quarter-final on June 2, 2025, overcoming a tough challenge from No. 20 seed Ekaterina Alexandrova with a 6-0, 7-5 victory in 1 hour and 22 minutes. The win extends Gauff’s strong clay-court form this season to a 15-3 record and marks her ninth major quarter-final overall.

Gauff dominated the first set as Alexandrova struggled with 15 unforced errors and managed just three winners. The second set saw Alexandrova raise her level, applying pressure and recovering from a break down, but Gauff held firm at the crucial moments, winning 12 of the last 16 points. Despite Alexandrova capitalizing on two double faults from Gauff at 5-4, she couldn’t convert those chances.

In her on-court interview, Gauff acknowledged Alexandrova’s improved play in the second set: “Some balls I hit a good shot and she would hit a winner on the line. If she wins like that I can keep my head up high, so overall I thought I played great.”

Meanwhile, Mirra Andreeva also booked her spot in the quarter-finals with a 6-3, 7-5 win over Daria Kasatkina. Andreeva rallied from 5-3 down in the second set, saving a set point to reach her second Grand Slam quarter-final. She set a new record as the youngest player to reach back-to-back Roland Garros quarter-finals since Martina Hingis in 1997-98.

So far this year at Roland Garros, Andreeva hasn’t dropped a set or conceded more than five games in any set. Her quarter-final opponent will be either Jessica Pegula or wildcard Lois Boisson.
