At least 12 people were killed in Mexico's Guanajuato state during a street celebration in Irapuato, when gunmen opened fire on a crowd dancing and drinking in honor of St. John the Baptist. The attack happened overnight, according to local authorities.
An unverified video circulated on social media appears to show people dancing in a housing complex patio as a live band plays, moments before chaos breaks out with the sound of gunfire.
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum condemned the attack and confirmed that an investigation is underway. Guanajuato, northwest of Mexico City, has long struggled with high levels of violence, largely due to clashes between criminal groups over drug routes and other illicit operations. The state has already recorded 1,435 homicides in the first five months of 2025—more than double the figure in any other Mexican state.
Just a day earlier, five more people were killed in separate incidents across Guanajuato, and a similar attack last month left seven dead during a Catholic Church event in San Bartolo de Berrios.
