Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav has reacted with deep sorrow to the shocking murder of Raja Raghuvanshi, an Indore-based businessman whose honeymoon trip to Meghalaya ended in tragedy. Describing the case as “very painful,” the Chief Minister urged families to exercise greater caution when making decisions about marriage and allowing children to travel long distances, especially soon after such important life events.
Speaking to ANI, Yadav said, “When children and families are discussing marriage, it is important to carefully consider many things. Moreover, going forward, there is also a need to reflect on letting children go far away.” He added that while the case is heartbreaking, it also offers valuable lessons to society.
Raja, 29, was murdered during his honeymoon, allegedly at the behest of his wife, Sonam Raghuvanshi (25), who police say conspired with her alleged lover Raj Kushwaha (21) and his friends Vishal Singh Chauhan, Akash Rajput, and Anand Kurmi. After returning to her maternal home on May 15, just four days after their wedding, Sonam is believed to have started plotting the murder. She later convinced Raja to visit Kamakhya temple in Assam before heading to Meghalaya — reportedly to delay intimacy and allow time for her co-conspirators to reach the location.
The couple checked out of a homestay in Nongriat on May 23. On June 3, Raja’s body was found in a deep gorge, approximately 20 km away. The autopsy report confirmed blunt force trauma with sharp injuries to the head. Following a massive manhunt, Sonam surrendered on June 8 at a police station in Ghazipur, UP. All five accused are now in Meghalaya Police custody.
Raja’s family, initially in shock, has demanded the death penalty for all those responsible. His mother, who had once defended Sonam, publicly disowned her after learning of the evidence. Meanwhile, Sonam’s mother continues to claim her daughter is innocent, calling the charges fabricated.
This case has sparked nationwide outrage and deepened conversations about trust, safety in relationships, and the emotional aftermath of violent betrayal, with CM Mohan Yadav’s remarks adding a sobering societal angle to the tragedy.
