Nicholas Pooran was selected MI New York's captain after retiring from international competition

Just a day after his unexpected retirement from international cricket, Nicholas Pooran has been appointed captain of MI New York for the 2025 season of Major League Cricket (MLC).

Pooran’s announcement on June 10, at the age of 29, marked the end of a vibrant international career where he played 61 ODIs and 106 T20Is for West Indies. Despite stepping away from international duties, Pooran’s cricketing journey continues with leadership in franchise leagues, particularly MLC where he was a standout performer.

In the inaugural MLC season in 2023, Pooran was instrumental in MI New York’s title win, smashing an unforgettable 137 not out in the final against Seattle Orcas — the highest score in MLC history. He also finished as the tournament’s top scorer, amassing 388 runs.

In a celebratory announcement, MI New York hailed him as “our hero, our ledge, our skipper,” calling the Trinidadian left-hander a “pocket dynamite” and one of the most feared batters in the world.

Pooran will lead a strong side packed with international firepower, including:

  • Quinton de Kock

  • Kieron Pollard

  • Trent Boult

  • Rashid Khan

  • Michael Bracewell

  • Azmatullah Omarzai

  • George Linde

  • Naveen-ul-Haq

MI New York's 2025 campaign begins June 13, where they take on the Texas Super Kings.
