Once more, Asim Munir proclaims Pakistan a net regional stabilizer and threatens India

Pakistan Army Chief General Asim Munir’s recent remarks have significantly escalated tensions with India, as he once again accused New Delhi of “unprovoked aggression” and vowed a “decisive response” to any future Indian military action. Speaking at the Pakistan Naval Academy in Karachi, Munir described India’s actions as a “troubling absence of strategic foresight,” blaming the country for deliberately fueling regional instability.

Key Highlights from Munir's Speech:

  • Accusation of Unprovoked Attacks:
Munir claimed India had attacked Pakistan twice without provocation, though he did not specify the incidents. He said Islamabad had always responded "resolutely and responsibly."

  • Kashmir References Resurface:
He reignited the Kashmir issue, calling it Pakistan’s “jugular vein”, repeating a phrase previously used by Zulfikar Ali Bhutto. He added that Pakistan would never forget the struggle of Kashmiris and continues to support a UN-backed resolution to the dispute.

  • Timing and Implications:
His comments come days after the Pahalgam terror attack, where Pakistan-backed terrorists massacred over two dozen male tourists. India has directly blamed Pakistan-based terror outfits for orchestrating the attack.

Escalatory Actions and Indian Response:

  • Indus Waters Treaty Put on Hold:
India suspended key provisions of the 1960 Indus Waters Treaty, a historic agreement that has survived wars and hostilities. This move signals a serious downgrading of bilateral cooperation.

  • Launch of Operation Sindoor:
India reportedly carried out targeted strikes on terror launchpads inside Pakistan-occupied territories, under Operation Sindoor, sending a message of zero tolerance for cross-border terrorism.

  • Intelligence Links:
Indian agencies are said to have presented evidence of direct Pakistani military backing for the Pahalgam attackers. These include satellite images, intercepted communications, and weapons with Pakistani markings.

Strategic Significance:

  • “Jugular Vein” Remark Raises Alarm:
Munir’s repetition of the term “jugular vein” is widely seen in India as a provocative war cry, especially in the wake of brutal civilian killings. This rhetoric has hardened India's stance, both diplomatically and militarily.

  • Pakistan’s Internal Context:
Munir’s remarks are also being interpreted as an attempt to unite Pakistan’s military and public amid domestic instability, inflation, and rising civil-military tensions.

  • India's Position:
New Delhi has reaffirmed that Jammu & Kashmir is an integral part of India, and any further violence will be met with “measured but forceful” retaliation.

This exchange indicates a fresh and dangerous spiral in Indo-Pak relations, with military posturing, diplomatic downgrades, and counter-terror operations now defining the climate. India is expected to raise this issue at international forums, including the UN General Assembly, citing continued Pakistani support for terrorism.
