OpenAI’s vision for ChatGPT is evolving far beyond a simple chatbot into a “super-assistant” that intimately understands users and acts as a seamless interface to the internet and everyday life. Documents from late 2024, revealed during Google’s US antitrust trial, show OpenAI’s ambitious plan to launch this super assistant by mid-2025, possibly as soon as June.
This next-generation ChatGPT aims to be an intelligent, versatile helper with what the company calls “T-shaped skills”—broad capabilities for handling all kinds of daily tasks, from answering questions, managing calendars, booking services, and even helping with complex needs like legal advice or planning vacations. The goal is for ChatGPT to assist with anything “a smart, trustworthy, emotionally intelligent person with a computer could do.”
OpenAI believes its latest GPT models (o2 and o3) already have the intelligence needed for these agentic tasks. Coupled with tools like direct computer use, multimodal inputs (text, voice, images), and generative user interfaces, ChatGPT can interact in rich, natural ways tailored to each task.
A key part of this vision is making ChatGPT available everywhere—in phones, desktops, and potentially new hardware. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, working with former Apple design chief Jony Ive, is reportedly developing a new device, possibly a smart home assistant. The documents hint that ChatGPT could help in all life contexts: at home for music and recipes, on the go for navigation and socializing, at work for meetings and presentations, and even during solitary moments for reflection and relaxation.
OpenAI is also focused on ensuring ChatGPT becomes the default assistant on devices despite competition from tech giants who might favor their own AI products. To do this, OpenAI plans to work with regulators to secure fair access and distribution.
However, scaling this vision presents infrastructure challenges. The documents candidly note that “growth and revenue won’t line up forever,” highlighting concerns over the costs of expansion. To address this, OpenAI is investing billions through its Stargate project to build new data centers across the US and UAE, aiming to support ChatGPT’s growing user base and capabilities.
In summary, OpenAI’s super-assistant strategy is set to redefine AI’s role—from a question-answering tool to a deeply integrated, emotionally intelligent life partner, spanning devices, locations, and tasks, with a strong push for broad accessibility and reliability by mid-2025.
