Former US President Donald Trump has launched a sharp attack on New York assemblyman Zohran Mamdani, calling him a "100% Communist Lunatic." The comments came after Mamdani, a democratic socialist, won the Democratic nomination in a closely watched primary that also included former Governor Andrew Cuomo.
Trump criticized Mamdani’s appearance and intelligence in a post on his social media platform, claiming, “He looks terrible, his voice is grating, and he’s not very smart.” He also targeted Mamdani’s political allies, mocking progressive Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and her supporters, and referred to Senator Chuck Schumer as “our Great Palestinian Senator” for allegedly supporting Mamdani.
In another post, Trump sarcastically suggested that Democrats should nominate Jasmine Crockett for president, appoint AOC and her allies to Cabinet positions, and give Mamdani a key role, warning that such a move would leave the country “really screwed.”
Mamdani, 33, secured the nomination with over 43 percent of the vote. His platform includes rent freezes, free public buses, and city-owned grocery stores, funded by higher taxes on wealthy individuals and corporations. His vocal support for Palestinian rights has also drawn criticism from pro-Israel groups and conservative figures.
The result is being seen as a signal of growing strength among the Democratic Party’s progressive wing, and Trump’s remarks suggest Republicans are likely to use such candidates as examples of what they call a radical shift within the Democratic ranks.
