Vijay Rupani, the former Gujarat chief minister, on the Air India plane that went down in Ahmedabad


An Air India Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner (Flight AI 171) crashed near Ahmedabad airport shortly after takeoff on Thursday, June 12, 2025. The flight, bound for London’s Gatwick Airport, was carrying 242 people, including 230 passengers and 12 crew members.

Former Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani was confirmed to be onboard, seated in Business Class. His presence was listed as passenger number 12.

The aircraft crashed within minutes of departure, and thick black smoke was seen rising from the crash site. Emergency services, including seven fire engines, were rushed to the scene.

The DGCA and senior government officials, including Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu and Home Minister Amit Shah, are overseeing the response. Flight operations at the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport have been suspended temporarily.

There is no official confirmation yet on the number of casualties. An investigation into the cause of the crash is underway.
