DMK MP Kanimozhi Karunanidhi, currently leading a multi-party delegation in Spain as part of India’s diplomatic outreach after Operation Sindoor, made headlines with a thought-provoking statement on the national language of India. When asked by a member of the Indian diaspora in Madrid, she replied:
“The national language of India is Unity in Diversity. That is the message this delegation brings to the world, and that is the most important thing today.”
Her response subtly reflected ongoing tensions in India over language policy, particularly the DMK’s opposition to Hindi imposition and the three-language formula proposed in the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which the Tamil Nadu government has vocally rejected. The issue remains a flashpoint in Centre-state relations, especially with parties like the DMK strongly promoting linguistic pluralism.
In addressing concerns over terrorism, Kanimozhi emphasised the need for internal focus over diversion:
“So much has to be done in our country and we want to do that. Unfortunately, we are being diverted. We have to deal with terrorism, war which is absolutely unnecessary.”
She also reassured the diaspora about security in Kashmir, stating:
“As Indians, we have to make the message clear that India is safe. They may try whatever they want, they cannot derail us. We will ensure that Kashmir remains a safe place.”
Spain is the final destination of the five-nation tour, which is part of India’s global engagement campaign following Operation Sindoor—a strategic retaliation to terror threats post the Pahalgam attack. The delegation includes MPs and dignitaries from across party lines:
-
Rajeev Kumar Rai (Samajwadi Party)
-
Brijesh Chowta (BJP)
-
Ashok Mittal (AAP)
-
Prem Chand Gupta (RJD)
-
Manjeev Singh Puri (former diplomat)
This outreach aims to build consensus on India’s stance against cross-border terrorism while also showcasing the country’s democratic diversity and resilience on the global stage.
